Security tips for Macs and other Apple devices

Many Apple users believe that their Macs and iPhones are invulnerable to security threats, but this just puts them at risk of falling prey to hackers. Macs, iPhones, and other Apple devices are not unhackable, and the only way to truly protect all your devices is to observe safe practices.

Keep abreast of current security threats

Educate your organization about the most common ways systems are infected or hacked. Apple users in your organization must be aware of recent security updates on iPhones and Macs, for instance.

  • iPhones – Security and privacy are key concerns with every iOS update, which is why Apple highlighted its privacy and security features when it released iOS 13, the latest iOS version. However, in June, it was reported that 38% of Apple iOS apps contained critical vulnerabilities, which was only slightly lower compared to Android’s 43%. The vulnerabilities were reportedly caused by weaknesses in security mechanisms.
  • Macs – In 2017’s WannaCry/WannaCrypt ransomware attacks, only Windows machines were affected. This shows that Apple does a fairly good job of guarding against threats. That said, Macs are certainly not immune to malware and viruses. In 2019, a malware called OSX/CrescentCore was reportedly found on several websites and worked by installing an infected file or a Safari extension.

Practice secure web browsing

The vast majority of security breaches happen when a user installs programs, knowingly or unknowingly, or clicks on links in emails or on the Web that contain malware. Take these precautions to avoid intrusions:

  1. Never open email attachments from unknown senders especially those with file extensions that are for programs, i.e., DMG. These include attachments in emails from large companies and financial institutions. When in doubt, contact the sender to verify.
  2. Always hover over links before you click on them. If you receive an email with a link in it, hover over the URL to see where it links to and look for spelling or grammar mistakes, or any other indication that it’s a fraudulent link.
  3. Don’t automatically open any downloaded apps. Verify an app by taking a look at its name and its source information. If the site appears to be different from where you downloaded it, the app may be infected.
  4. When you try to watch content from any random website, many sites will ask you to download a plugin or video player. It’s best to avoid these sites altogether because many of them are known to host malware that can install itself.
  5. When in doubt, don’t take action. If you’re unsure about a link or app you are being asked to download, simply don’t click on it or download it.

Install antivirus scanners

It’s amazing how many Mac users don’t bother with an antivirus scanner. These tools are indispensable for keeping your systems and data secure. There are a number of excellent scanners out there, so make sure to pick a solution that covers both desktop and mobile devices to ensure optimal security. We can also help you pick the best solution for your business.

All about macOS Catalina

macOS Catalina’s October 2019 rollout is only a few days away, and many can’t wait to see what the new and improved operating system has in store. Here are some of the features to look out for in Catalina.

Before you download macOS Catalina, make sure your device meets the system requirements. Apple has said that Macs and MacBooks that could upgrade to macOS Mojave can be updated to Catalina, including:

  • 12-inch MacBook (2015 and later)
  • MacBook Air (2012 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (2012 and later)
  • Mac mini (2012 and later)
  • iMac (2012 and later)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • Mac Pro (2013 and later)

New apps for music, audio, and video

One of the most conspicuous changes to Catalina is the absence of iTunes — in its place is Apple Music. It has the same interface as its predecessor and gives you access to more than 50 million songs that can be streamed or downloaded.

For your podcasts and videos, there’s Apple Podcasts and Apple TV, respectively. Podcasts enables you to listen to over 750,000 free podcasts, browse episodes easily by guest or topic, and download for offline listening.

Meanwhile, Apple TV offers thousands of movies to buy or rent, ranging from the latest films and TV shows to those you previously bought from iTunes. And starting November 1, you can stream or download all-original movies and series from video subscription service Apple TV+, which you can access through the Apple TV app.

All-new Reminders, Notes, and Search

The Reminders app has been overhauled not just for macOS but for all Apple platforms too. You can now add attachments to reminders and draft smart lists that integrate information from other lists, and tag people in reminders — and be reminded that you tagged them the next time you speak to them using the Messages app.

Meanwhile, Notes lets you collaborate on a single note or several folders with your team or family members. To do this, launch Notes from your dock and open the note you’d like to share with others. In the toolbar, click Add People > Note name or Folder name. Next, choose how you’d like to share the note or folder with them (Mail, Message, etc.).

Finally, the Search function now has the ability to recognize objects and text within images. Additionally, suggested searches that you can click to view make looking for items on your Mac quicker.

A second monitor with Sidecar

Sidecar allows you to mirror your Mac’s desktop on your iPad, effectively turning it into a second screen. This is useful when you’re working on one app but need to reference another — no more switching from tab to tab! And if you’re working on a presentation, you can preview it on your iPad while you edit on your Mac.

Manage your email better

Block specific senders and move their emails straight to the trash with the improved Mail app on macOS Catalina. You can also unsubscribe from email lists and mute thread notifications, allowing you to keep distractions at bay. Also, Mail’s new layout and interface gives you the option to preview a message below or to the right of the message list.

Get usage reports

First introduced in iOS 12, Screen Time’s real-time usage reports give you insight into how you use your Mac. iCloud keeps track of data on how long you use your Mac, what apps you use, what websites you visit most, and even what notifications you receive most often. With these data, you can monitor and block apps and websites that distract you from work and other tasks.

Enhanced security

Keep your Mac and its contents protected from cyber risks with the improved Gatekeeper. macOS’s security feature verifies downloaded apps before you run them, reducing the likelihood of executing malware. Another valuable security feature is Activation Lock, which ensures that only you can reactivate or wipe your device if it’s ever lost or stolen.

Easy login and app installation

Lastly, with macOS Catalina, you can log into accounts that need your Mac password by just double-clicking on the side button of your Apple Watch. You can also use your Apple watch to approve app installation, unlock settings, and more.

These features barely scratch the surface of all that macOS Catalina has to offer. Want to learn more about how the latest OS can help improve your productivity in and out of the office? Reach out to our Mac experts today.

Why you shouldn’t jailbreak your iPad

A lot of iPad users resort to jailbreaking to gain greater control over iOS. With a jailbroken iPad, you can download apps unavailable in the App Store and get additional functionality from apps installed on your device. However, this virtually unrestricted access to apps and features has its cons, not least of which are security issues. Read on to find out why you shouldn’t jailbreak your iPad.

Security vulnerabilities

Jailbreaking removes security features designed to protect your iPad and the sensitive information it contains. So when you download and install third-party apps onto your jailbroken iPad, you may introduce malware, spyware, and viruses that can compromise your data’s security and slow down or damage your device.

Warranty issues

Although it’s perfectly legal to jailbreak your iPad, Apple has made it clear that jailbreaking is a violation of the iOS software license agreement. As such, any jailbroken Apple device will not be protected under their warranty service coverage. Apple may even deny service for your jailbroken iPad, so if something goes wrong with it, you’re basically on your own.

No iOS updates

Technically, you can install iOS updates onto your jailbroken iPad, but you’ll lose your jailbreak. This means you have to go through the entire jailbreaking process again and reinstall all apps and extensions. What’s more, if you decide to update your iOS, you may have to wait for an updated jailbreak version to become available, which could take days, weeks, or even months.

Device instability

Jailbreaking can cause your iPad to randomly reboot or malfunction. Also, because third-party apps can access features and protocols not available for apps designed or approved by Apple, you may find that your iPad crashes more often or that certain apps don’t work smoothly.

Shortened battery life

The jailbreak in and of itself doesn’t affect your iPad’s battery life. Shortened battery life issues on jailbroken iPads may be caused by installed third-party apps and tweaks. Some of these, like lock screen widgets and live wallpapers, may be increasing background activity on your device, thus draining your battery faster.

Unreliable voice and data services

If you use jailbroken iPads or iPhones, you may experience dropped calls and spotty data connections more frequently. This can be a major issue if you use your device for work, as unreliable voice and data services can hinder your communications with your colleagues and clients. Also, you may encounter some location data problems on your jailbroken device.

Now that Apple has added so many features to iOS, jailbreaking iPads and iPhones is not as prevalent as it was in previous years. But if you want to increase your device’s functionality even more, jailbreaking is something you definitely want to look into. Keep in mind, though, that it has many disadvantages that can put your device and data at risk.

5 Cool features of macOS Catalina

macOS Catalina is the latest version of Apple’s operating system for Mac computers. From three new apps for managing music, podcasts, and your favorite movies and TV shows to productivity- and creativity-boosting programs, Catalina offers a myriad of exciting features that will enhance overall user experience. Read on to find out more.

Music, Podcast, and Apple TV apps

At the 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple announced the end of iTunes. In lieu of the soon-to-be-defunct music service and software program, three new apps for music, TV, and podcasts will be introduced in macOS Catalina.

With an interface similar to iTunes’, Apple Music gives you access to your existing music library (even songs from CDs you burned) so you can easily import or stream your music. You can even look up the lyrics of the song you’re listening to in the Now Playing section.

Meanwhile, the Apple TV app works as your all-in-one hub for movies and TV shows: it lets you stream and download content from streaming services and subscription channels like HBO and Showtime. You can also use the app to rent or buy new movies or TV shows.

Apple Podcasts brings you hundreds of thousands of free podcasts, including those you’re subscribed to or have added to iTunes. Get episode updates on your Mac to keep up with your favorite podcasters, and look up episodes by guest, host, or topic with the app’s improved search function.

Sidecar

Turn your iPad into a second monitor for your Mac and extend your workspace with Sidecar. Just connect your devices via cable or wirelessly, and you can mirror your Mac’s desktop so your iPad shows the same apps and content as your Mac. And if your apps support Touch Bar, Sidecar enables touch input even if your Mac doesn’t have a Touch Bar. You can also use your iPad as a drawing tablet for your Mac if you have an Apple Pencil stylus.

Project Catalyst

Project Catalyst will soon make iPad and iPhone apps available on Macs and Macbooks. Catalyst makes it possible for app developers to port their iOS apps over to macOS, bringing an array of new tools and programs to your Mac.

The development tool is still a work in progress, though, so there are only a few universal iOS and macOS apps right now. These include Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Podcasts but you can expect to see a few more roll out with Catalina later this year.

Find My

Find My app combines Find My Friends and Find My iPhone into one seamless program. Aside from all the tools found in the individual apps, Find My offers new ones that work over Bluetooth, as well as Wi-Fi and cellular data, to find your or other people’s devices even when they’re offline. And because Find My uses a system that encrypts the location of lost or stolen devices, you’ll be the only one who can see it. This makes finding your Macbook, iPhone, or iPad more secure, not to mention easier.

Voice Control

Manage every aspect of your Mac with Voice Control. This accessibility feature built on the Siri speech recognition engine lets you dictate notes and messages and edit these as you go along. What’s more, Voice Control is smart enough to differentiate between dictations and commands. So if you say, “Buy milk. Click send,” only “Buy milk” will be typed out and sent as a message.

There are many more features and capabilities in the latest macOS, all of them designed to improve the way users work and play. If you want to learn more about how Catalina will enhance your productivity, drop us a line today.
